Ferret ear cleaning sounds a lot easier than it is. Have you tried to touch your fuzzies ears lately? Then you know what I’m talking about ;-)
Luckily, you really don’t need to clean them more than once every 2 or 3 months. The more you clean the ears, the more wax they produce. It does depend a bit on the ferret though, some hobs seem to produce more ear wax than others.
Normal fuzzy ear wax is yellowish or red-brownish in color. If the wax is almost black, you could have a ferret ear mites infestation on your hands. It’s also important to do some research with your nose. Your ferrets ears should have little to no smell. If they do stink, take Mr. Fuzzbutt to the vet, it might be a sign of ear mites or an infection.
Scruff your fuzzy. If you don’t have help handy, try to hold the top of the ear with the hand you use to scruff.
Place 3-4 drops of the ear cleaning solution in each ear.
Massage the area right below the ear in circles to loosen the wax inside the ear canal. This will also bring it up to the surface.
Use a Q-tip dipped in cleaner to remove the gunk from the outer ear.
Repeat this with a clean cotton swab until the outer ear is clean. If you poured the cleaning solution into a dish, you can simply dip the clean side of the swab in the dish and work faster.
Once it’s all clean, finish up with a dry Q-tip.
As soon as your fuzzy has the chance, he will shake his head wildly. Depending on how far along you are in the cleaning process, this means icky ear wax will be flying all over the place. And you. Which is why I recommend cleaning your ferret’s ears in an easy to clean room (like the bathroom) and wearing clothes that can get dirty (or a hazmat suit, whichever you prefer).
Any liquid solutions that go into your fuzzies ears should be body temperature. You can place them in your pocket 5 minutes before you start.
Water and peroxide shouldn’t be used to clean ferret ears. Wet ears are much more prone to infections.
Don’t push the Q-tip in the ear canal. Hold it along the fuzzies head. This will prevent you from pushing more wax into the ear canal and clogging it up completely.
